What is Ginastica Natural?

Students often ask me what is the best conditioning for BJJ.  My first answer: BJJ!  You will continue to develop technique as well as your conditioning, whereas if you went jogging, there is no technical benefit.

Doing more BJJ isn’t always possible.  You may not be able to make it to the school to train or you may be injured.  You can run, but you won’t be moving the way you need to in BJJ.  You can lift weights (which I recommend), but you will never use those movements to escape of attack when you’re on the ground.

I recommend swimming, because there is so little stress on the joints, and the pressure on your lungs is somewhat similar to having someone on top of you.  Yoga can be great for functional strength and flexibility (although which type of yoga is another issue).  And both of these exercises are great for cross training.

One of the best exercises is Alvaro Romano’s Ginastica Natural.  It is used by many of the top bjj practitioners in the world.

If you’re interested in learning Ginastica Natural, you can buy Alvaro’s dvds.  Otherwise you can experiment.  Try simulating rolling, but without a partner.  It may seem akward and not fluid in the beginning, but after a while you will find that it is a great warm up and you will be using the same muscles needed in jiu-jitsu without the stress on the joints or the risk of injury.  It is also a great moving meditation.
